RYO KAN

CDMX, Mexico City, 2018

BED & BREAKFAST

Mexico City's "Little Tokyo," near the Paseo de la Reforma financial corridor, is the setting for Latin America's first ryokan by MYT+GLVDK.

Inspired by different elements of Japanese lifestyle and culture, the concept balances tradition and cutting-edge technology while keeping with the principles of simplicity and harmony with nature.

The façade, designed to evoke origami paper folds, prepares you to enter Ryo Kan, a serene space in neutral tones.

Common areas comprise a patio with organic textures and local materials; a zen garden—the heart of the ryokan—juxtaposes East and West, traditional and contemporary, all while sheltering you from the city bustle; a reading area with soft lighting, pillows and books; a terrace with four onsen—traditional Japanese baths—and a spa area. All of these areas feature natural lighting, and on the top floor, glass ceilings allow the daylight inside the entire building.

The decor is sober and elegant, with a color palette ranging from cream to white for a cozy atmosphere. The walls are decorated with ceramic items in the same hues.

All 10 suites—each with a specific identity and aesthetic—have been conceived following the premise of millennial Kyoto homes. Personalized with bejuco (guaco, a type of vine used in Mayan architecture), terrazzo and oak, they have also been furnished with tatamis, fusumas—sliding doors—and tables with tea sets, among other evident elements of Japanese culture. They also boast domotics and home automation details, easily regulated through their own app.

The decoration and amenities of the rooms are in tune with the rest of the building, from custom-made furniture to yukatas and handmade blankets.
