MEXICO CITY, JULY 2022. A colloquial term to describe the sensation of tasting a wine was the starting point for the

creation of Brutal, Vinata de Barrio, the new project by the studio MYT+GLVDK dedicated to epicureans and lovers of

sensual pleasures.

In this enoteca –wine shop– concept Andrés Mier y Terán and Regina Galvanduque undertake a playful and emotional

approach to the culture of wine through architecture, design, identity, and merchandising, inspired by the wine cellars and

wine bars found in iconic districts of the world’s great cities, and their characteristic labels, which themselves reflect the

printmaking traditions of different latitudes.

Brutal, Vinata de Barrio emerges from the desire of an expat couple based in Mexico who seek to share the customs and savoir-vivre of France and Chile—their countries of origin—around the elixirs of the grape, its cavistes and wine bars. In the hands of Mier y Terán and Galvanduque, the space embodies an unfussy atmosphere that invites guests to discover wine list curated by two professionals of the hospitality industry, whose imprint is based on the sensory effect produced by a grand cru on the palate.

Located in the San Miguel Chapultepec district, Brutal, Vinata de Barrio occupies an Art Deco-style building with an ample

area of 30 square meters including a main space for wine display and a long service table. Meanwhile, to the rear and

alongside the open kitchen, is the chef’s table, intended for tastings. Here the daily menu of baguettes and quiches are also

prepared as snacks to accompany after-work aperitifs and dinners with wine pairings conceived by guest chefs.

The ambiance is dominated by neutral hues with a palette of earth, gray, pepper and black tones, referencing essential

elements of winemaking such as barrels, cork, and the soil. For the interior design, MYT+GLVDK has opted for a contemporary

fusion of the comptoir and enoteca with an unusual harmony of textures, as represented by the walls and bars clad in cork,

contrasting with the electropainted metal shelves, the chairs made with wood recovered from old barrels from the town

of Dolores, Hidalgo, the fluted glass lamps and the dark touches in the furniture that are a nod to grapes and vineyards.

At Brutal, Vinata de Barrio, the most prominent decorative elements are the bottles themselves, displayed throughout the space and organized according to an original taxonomy that catalogues them into groups based on the sensations and ideas that arise from tasting their individual elixirs. As a result, the careful selection of wines from Mexico, France, Chile, Spain, Portugal and Italy is presented in a progressive nomenclature that ranges from the classic to the brutal, by way of the daring and the supernatural. On top of these, the house offers four wines of its own: a red, a white, a rosé and an orange wine, the latter a white made using the long maceration techniques usually employed for reds.

The visual identity conceived by Mier y Terán and Galvanduque draws on the genre of wine labels and how these reflect the customs of different countries. The result is a synthesis emphasizing the combination of hand-drawn typographies that reflect a diversity of styles, including the geometry of Art Deco, the rhythm of calligraphy, the pure lines of sans-serif fonts, as well as 3-D and perspective effects.

The Brutal, Vinata de Barrio experience is complemented by a range of deli items including cheeses, breads and charcuterie for all those seeking to enjoy lunch, an aperitif, or dinner to take home.

Brutal, Vinata de Barrio is a new destination in San Miguel Chapultepec aimed at both wine aficionados and newcomers alike.
